Ferrero in India

The third and last Michele Ferrero Entrepreneurial Project was born in India in 2007, in the State of Maharashtra.

In 2011, the production plant in Baramati (Maharashtra) was started. It is one of the Group's largest plants, located in a region which, by Indian standards, has a relatively low population density.
The current commercial offices of the Group are based in Pune, the second most populous city in the State of Maharashtra.

The Ferrero factory mainly produces for the domestic market, but also exports to other countries in Asia and Africa.
The Ferrero India factory is located in Baramati, a city in the central rural area of the state of Maharashtra, in the Pune district. With around 70,000 inhabitants, it is considered a small city by local standards. However, it is an important settlement within a large agricultural district (producing sugar, wheat, grapes and other crops) populated by over 355,000 inhabitants residing in 116 rural villages.

Latest Social Activities

The city-countryside divide in India has a negative impact especially on women. This manifests itself clearly, for example, regarding access to and use of maternal and childcare services, which above all favor the more affluent urban populations.

To address some of these imbalances, the Government of India has launched the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), one of the largest government early childhood care programs in the world, implemented by the Ministry of Women and Development of the child. It provides a wide range of maternal and child health services, including: pre-school non-formal education activities; child nutrition improvement programs; health awareness, vaccinations, health checks. Such services are provided through the so-called Anganwadi network.
Anganwadi literally means "sheltered courtyards". They are small infrastructures managed locally by the village authorities.

With the aim of extending its support to rural communities - where most of our female workers live - the Michele Ferrero Entrepreneurial Project in India has decided to build eight new Anganwadis, between 2019-2022, in the villages around the Ferrero factory in Baramati.

To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in 2019 between Ferrero India and the Pune District Council (Zilla Parishad) responsible for maintaining and managing these Anganwadis. The agreement (MoU) details the commitments and responsibilities of both parties, as well as the criteria for identifying the villages and places hosting the Anganwadi built by Ferrero.

However, Ferrero India's commitment is not limited only to infrastructural support. Currently (2023) consultations are ongoing with the local administrative authorities to strengthen the professional skills and abilities of the personnel working within the Anganwadi.

Past Social Activities

Financial support was provided to the Don Bosco Shelter - which accommodates street children in Mumbai and offers them vocational training - and the “A roof in Mumbai” project which provides education to young girls living in one of Mumbai’s biggest shanty towns.

Ferrero India has always kept a special eye on the needs of its plant’s workers coming from surrounding rural villages, especially female workers. These can commute to the factory, in fact, utilizing a bus service set up by the company.

In 2014, the Michele Ferrero Entrepreneurial Project in India launched its “Pietro Ferrero Kindergarden” at Baramati. This modern educational facility, with a covered surface of about 1000 square meters, hosts at present about 100 children aged below six years. Two third of them are sons and daughters of female employees working at the Ferrero Baramati plant; the remaining one third, instead, are children of disadvantaged families of surrounding rural villages. Ferrero India provides also to them, free of charge, safe transport to/from the Kindergarten, as well as a wide range of quality educational, nutritional and medical services.
